Sod vs. Seed in Southwestern Ontario: Cost, Timing and What Actually Works
Sod or seed? It's the first decision for anyone fixing a muddy yard, finishing a new build, or restoring a lawn after a pool removal. Both can give you a great lawn in Southwestern Ontario, but they differ a lot in cost, timing, effort and risk. Here's an honest comparison from a crew that installs sod across London, St. Thomas, Strathroy, Komoka, Ilderton and Dorchester every season.
The short answer
Choose sod if you want a usable lawn now, have slopes or erosion, have kids or dogs, or are finishing a new build or excavation project.
Choose seed if budget is the top priority, the area is small or patchy, and you can wait a season while keeping traffic off.
Sod vs. seed at a glance
Upfront cost: seed is cheaper; sod costs more because you're buying a finished lawn.
Time to a usable lawn: sod is ready for light use within a few weeks; seed often takes a full season.
Best install window: sod works spring through fall; seed does best in late summer to early fall.
Erosion control: sod protects soil immediately; seed leaves soil exposed until it fills in.
Weeds: quality sod starts dense and weed-free; seeded lawns often fight weeds in year one.
Watering: both need consistent water early on; seed needs light, frequent watering for weeks.
Why sod works so well in Southwestern Ontario
Instant cover on clay
Much of the London area has heavy clay soil. Bare clay crusts over, washes out in storms and turns to mud. Sod covers it instantly and holds it in place.
Quality is regulated
Ontario nursery sod is commonly grown to the specifications of the Nursery Sod Growers Association of Ontario, and municipal landscape standards, such as Brampton's, reference those specs and call for sod to be laid within 36 hours of being lifted. Fresh sod from a local farm roots faster.
Kentucky bluegrass blends suit our climate
Most Ontario sod is a Kentucky bluegrass blend. The Ontario government notes that Kentucky bluegrass needs about 2.5 cm of water per week to avoid going dormant, a useful benchmark for keeping any bluegrass lawn green.

When seed makes sense
Overseeding a thin but healthy lawn
Small bare patches where sod would be overkill
Large rural areas where cost per square foot matters most
When you can sow in late August or September and keep everyone off the area
What affects sod installation cost
We don't publish one-size-fits-all pricing because every yard is different, but these are the factors that move the number:
Square footage. Larger areas usually cost less per square foot.
Site prep. Removing old turf, weeds or debris and fixing grading takes time.
Topsoil. Many London lots need fresh topsoil over compacted clay. See our topsoil options.
Access. Wheelbarrow-only access takes longer than machine access.
Grading and drainage. If water pools, we fix that first; laying sod on a bad grade just makes a green puddle.
Use our landscape calculators to estimate how much sod or soil you need.
The prep is what makes sod succeed
Clear old turf, weeds, rocks and debris.
Grade for positive drainage away from the house.
Add topsoil and rake it smooth.
Roll the base lightly so it's firm but not compacted.
Lay sod with tight, staggered seams and no gaps or overlaps.
Roll and water immediately and deeply.
Skipping steps 2 and 3 is the most common reason DIY sod fails.
Timing: when to lay sod vs. sow seed
Spring: great for sod; seed fights weeds and summer heat.
Summer: sod works with diligent watering; seed is risky in heat and drought.
Late summer to early fall: the best time to seed and a great time for sod.
Late fall: sod can go down until the ground freezes. We explain why in Why Fall Is the Best Time for Sod Installation.

Frequently asked questions
Is sod worth the extra cost?
For most homeowners, yes: an instant lawn, no mud, fewer weeds and immediate erosion control.
Can you lay sod on clay?
Yes, but add a layer of quality topsoil and fix grading first so roots can grow and water drains.
How soon can I walk on new sod?
Keep traffic light for the first couple of weeks while roots knit in.
Do you install sod after pool removals and new builds?
Yes. Sod is the finishing step on most of our pool removals and excavation projects.
